Olivia Fox Cabane, author of The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism, recently gave a talk at Stanford University. Admittedly, I was a little dubious about her whole "teaching charisma" thing... but her presentation had a great hook.

Why It's Better to do Half Dome in January (or at least October), and Intro to Ice Block Sailing9/15/2014 I've done Half Dome more times than I can remember. It's an amazingly beautiful 18-ish-mile hike in Yosemite National Park, and everyone who can (and almost everyone can, with an early enough start) should do it at least once. This will be your reward. But Eva, you might be thinking, It's hard to get a permit! I can't do Half Dome without a permit!
There's simple solution to the permit problem. Go during the off-season, shoulder season or whatever you want to call the months of October-March. You know -- the times when you don't need a permit. Check the conditions first, obviously -- you probably don't want to do Half Dome in a blizzard, or run into unexpected road closures or anything. But if it looks like the weather's going to cooperate, there's no good reason not to go during the cooler months. But Eva, you may be wondering, Aren't the cables down October-March? Astute observation. The cables will be down -- but they will still be there. I love young adulthood -- it's such an interesting time with so many possibilities! This might be why, of all the strange and amazing jobs I've had (including advertising, archeology, anthropology, marketing and a lot of writing), my most meaningful professional experiences have always involved working with teens. I also recognize that growing numbers of gifted students feel anxious, depressed, or just a little empty -- often because the perceived road to success leaves little time for self-discovery. Which is why I started Paved With Verbs, my college and high school admissions essay service. To me, applying to school is a chance for students to reflect on their hard work, awards, extracurriculars and achievements, and connect it with the bigger picture -- them! It's about discovering meaning, then putting it into words that will help admissions officers feel like they really know you. If you or someone you know is applying to college or boarding school this fall, and need a little (or a lot of) help, check out some of the services I provide. I can guide you through the entire process, or we can just do hourly consults, depending on your needs. I'm also available to meet online via Skype or Google Hangout.

I love basketball. It's probably the best sport known to man, and I've spent way too much (or possibly not enough) of my adult life playing it. There were times when I would be at the courts three hours a night, every weeknight. It's just that great.
General convention says that you should open your mind and try new things when you travel. And I agree. But I also think that doing what you do at home while you travel is one of the best ways to make new friends and get involved in new communities. I think this because of basketball.
I happened upon a pickup game in Warsaw once, when I heard balls bouncing in a gymnasium I was passing. So I introduced myself to one of the guys, asked if I could get next, and hopped on. Language barriers didn't matter -- we got sweaty together and had a fun time. We went out for drinks after, and I got into a discussion with one of the men about the Polish word wolność, which means freedom. "There is a phrase in our national anthem, 'Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła / Kiedy my żyjemy,'" he told me. "It means, 'As long as I am alive, Poland is still fighting.' Because wolność is a very important word to us." The eagerness and sincerity in his eyes is something I'll never forget. Who knew I'd come to glimpse something so dear to him... because of basketball? Have you read about my Patreon campaign yet? I wrote a little blurb about it last week. In it, I talk about the Old Economy Steve Jobs meme, and how, yeah, the "new economy" does suck in some ways. But wouldn't you rather see the world like this?
Some opportunities of the past have disappeared. You can't necessarily buy a house and get a great job out of school anymore. But the digital age has ushered in some of the most exciting new opportunities ever.
For the last few years, I've lived a very fun and adventure-filled life -- and I haven't held a full-time job since 2011. It is easier than ever to work remotely -- and the sharing economy has enabled people like me to make and save money in a way that is social, environmental, or just plain smart. In this post, I discuss eight companies I've used (or will use) to make my lifestyle possible. |
