Here's Why It's SO Hard to Find Lost Hikers - And Why, If You Get Lost, You Should STOP. #Math5/26/2016
I read the saddest story ever this morning. A beautiful, vibrant woman named Geraldine Largay, or Inchworm, was found dead in her tent, almost two years after losing her way along the Appalachian Trail.

Everyone who knows me… knows that I’m a little gross.
I eat the carnitas burrito I accidentally left in my car for 24 hours. I use sticks I found on the ground to scoop my peanut butter and rocks to scrape the meat out of my coconuts. And I definitely don’t follow the five-second rule. But one thing I will never, ever do… is cook in a hostel kitchen. And you probably shouldn’t, either.
The plaster saints of the internet, whose shit certainly does not stink, are aflutter today. The reason? The White Savior Barbie instagram account.
I’ve been staying at the Arena y Sol in Dominical, Costa Rica, for the past week. And it’s been awesome – cool town, cool people, and entire surf breaks all to myself!
Since I no longer have my rental car, I’ve been getting to the breaks the way anyone would: thumbing it.
Pretty girl here (#ChooseBeautiful, amirite?). Like Felicia Czochanski, who recently sparked pure, ugly hatred on the internet for having the nerve to call herself pretty, I am tall and slender, with clear skin and a nice face and stuff. (I don't have 34DDs, though.)
As tired as I am of hearing people skinny shame and hot shame attractive women (Dear Social Justice Warriors: either it's okay to reduce a woman to her appearance, or it's not -- please make up your mind), I must admit that being pretty confers certain advantages.
I've written several times about how much fun it is to travel alone (see also: Advantages of Traveling While Female; 8 Super Awesome Ways to Make More Friends While You Travel; and Feeling Alone? The Solution May be to Travel... Alone). But after several years of dating the best travel companion EVER, I spent very little time traveling alone... and I began to wonder, Do I still feel that way?
Well. Here's where I am, RIGHT now, as I write this post:
Traveling. Sola. In Costa Rica (and possibly Nicaragua and/or Panama, eventually).
And I absolutely still love traveling alone. (Even though, technically, I've spent very little time actually being alone.) Many years ago, I visited Bath, England -- a place of water, life, and healing. Upon one of the fountains there was engraved, "Aqua est Vida." Water is life.
And plastic is death.

Every few months, I see an article or two on my newsfeed about how voluntourism -- volunteer travel -- is bad, because non-experts who only have a week or two to volunteer aren't actually helpful. And, of course, each of these articles suggests that instead of spending thousands of dollars on volunteer travel opportunities... you should just donate thousands of dollars to a nonprofit.
I sincerely wish people would stop publishing these articles.
A group of dear friends recently returned from their Grand Canyon whitewater kayaking trip bearing this:
