Whether for your health, your fitness, or your looks, many of us want to want to work out... but we don't.
I have the opposite problem (err, "problem"): I have no interest or motivation to work out... yet I do it all the time.

The REAL Reason Most Schools Don't (and maybe shouldn't) Have a Gifted Track Until 3rd Grade.6/21/2016
When I was in kindergarten, they tried to send me away to a school for dumb kids. But by the time I got to third grade, they were trying to bump me up a year and recommending me to Talented and Gifted summer programs. A psychologist from a nearby university determined, after a battery of cognitive tests, that I was a very abstract thinker.
Which is why I was intrigued when a certain Quora user asked, "At what age do gifted children know they're different?"
We all want our kids to have happy, magical childhoods (I hope).
And, due to changes in our society -- technology addiction, over-scheduled childhoods, and decreased participation in community activities, to name a few -- many adults feel like they don't have many friends in their neighborhood. In fact, one in four of us say we have "no close friends to talk to." There's a simple way to address both of these issues.
I recently wrote that one great goal for creative types (and aren’t we all creative types?) is to follow the 80-20 rule: consume 80% of the time, and create the other 20%.
This is important for two reasons:
Are you really expressing yourself -- or are you just dressing a certain way? Are you really showing the world your true self -- or are you just putting on a performance for an audience?
Genetically Modified Potatoes Contain 70% Fewer Cancer-Causing Compounds Than “Organic” Ones5/23/2016
The Stanford Marching Band once scattered from POTATO to NOTATO during their infamous field show, "These Irish, Why Must They Fight?" at the University of Notre Dame. The joke, while hilarious, did not go over well.
Turns out the potato famine was devastating and killed millions of people. The good news is! Scientists are working on a modified potato that is resistant to late blight (the cause of the famine), so nothing like that will ever happen again.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, "It is a happy talent to know how to play."
Intuitively, it makes sense. But was he actually, empirically right? The answer is yes. I know, because I checked. The whole point of my master's thesis was to answer this (and a few other) questions. But here's the thing: because playfulness is a talent, that means it's something we have to learn -- not something we're born with. And it appears as though many millennials missed the memo.
Read any good books lately? I have: Peggy Ornstein's New York Times bestselling Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches From the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture.
After finishing a chapter about Mattel and the American Girl Dolls, I was particularly struck by one of Ornstein's observations:
Anyone who's been to Disneyland -- or even just a local playground or grocery store -- has probably seen a young girl in a Disney Princess costume. I remember girls playing dress-up when I was young... but I don't remember owning an official princess dress. I started wondering when this trend started... and whether it's really a good idea for parents to dress their daughters up like princesses as daywear.
My research got interesting pretty quickly. Here are some of the facts that surprised me most: There is No Benefit to Having Self-Esteem. Here's What Children Should Be Learning, Instead.3/9/2016
Brace yourself -- I'm about to show you one of the cutest, most hilarious videos of all time. Ready?
Cool fact: that video is actually a replication of one of the most important psychology studies ever. Walter Mischel's Marshmallow Test measured the responses of three- and four-year-old students who were told they could either have one marshmallow now... or two marshmallows, if they could wait for five minutes. Then they were left alone with the marshmallow.
