Anyone who's been to Disneyland -- or even just a local playground or grocery store -- has probably seen a young girl in a Disney Princess costume. I remember girls playing dress-up when I was young... but I don't remember owning an official princess dress. I started wondering when this trend started... and whether it's really a good idea for parents to dress their daughters up like princesses as daywear.
My research got interesting pretty quickly. Here are some of the facts that surprised me most:

Last month, an activist named Ashley Williams made waves when she interrupted a private Clinton event. I found out about it when an acquaintance from high school posted about it, and it showed up on my Facebook newsfeed.
Confused about why people were praising Williams' "grace" and "courage", I wrote a comment, which turned into Shouting Doesn't Take Courage -- Listening Does: Why I'm Unimpressed by Ashley Williams. And my high school acquaintance swiftly responded by telling me (twice, in one comment) that I have "white privilege."

Every few months, I see an article or two on my newsfeed about how voluntourism -- volunteer travel -- is bad, because non-experts who only have a week or two to volunteer aren't actually helpful. And, of course, each of these articles suggests that instead of spending thousands of dollars on volunteer travel opportunities... you should just donate thousands of dollars to a nonprofit.
I sincerely wish people would stop publishing these articles. There is No Benefit to Having Self-Esteem. Here's What Children Should Be Learning, Instead.3/9/2016
Brace yourself -- I'm about to show you one of the cutest, most hilarious videos of all time. Ready?
Cool fact: that video is actually a replication of one of the most important psychology studies ever. Walter Mischel's Marshmallow Test measured the responses of three- and four-year-old students who were told they could either have one marshmallow now... or two marshmallows, if they could wait for five minutes. Then they were left alone with the marshmallow.
After hearing it come up for the millionth time today in conversation, I finally read your letter. Plenty of people have rushed to defend you. Plenty more have said some ugly things to and about you.
I'm not here to say you're right or wrong. I know being an adult is super hard -- believe me! I know the Bay Area is extremely, stupidly expensive -- I live here, too, and I'm secretly afraid that someday, I won't be able to afford it anymore. Nevertheless, I'm going to go ahead and commit one of the biggest sins known to man: offering my unsolicited advice. Do what you want with it.
Yesterday, Nature published a News Feature, Should you edit your children's genes? The TL;DR: "In the fierce debate about CRISPR gene editing, it's time to give patients a voice."
"Activism Responsibilities" Cause Students at Brown to Fail Classes and Have Panic Attacks2/23/2016
Last Thursday, Brown student Mei Novack published Schoolwork, advocacy place strain on student activists in the Brown Daily Herald. In it, she wrote, "Many student activists encounter mental, emotional and physical stress while trying to balance their academic and activist responsibilities."
Today I learned that Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues, a play that was all progressive and feminist and liberating just a few years ago... is now taboo, because it is "not inclusive" enough of women who don't have vaginas.
All the things you THOUGHT would make your kids safe, healthy and smart... could do the exact opposite!
Kids playing in the streets and spending time with adults. Songs about bathing. Sketches that criticize childhood obesity. Early Sesame Street is clearly "intended for grown-ups."
