Bloggers, life coaches and motivational speakers love telling people to stop caring what others think. And, to some degree, they're right. People don't watch, think or talk about you nearly as much as you think they do.
But. The idea that you can simply "quit caring" what others think goes against our very biology, and everything we were designed to do.

In the age of technology, cheating in academia has become rampant. It's never been easier to plagiarize assignments or get outside help on an exam.
In my most recent Paved With Verbs blog post, I tackled a question a lot of high school students wonder about community service:
"How do volunteer work and service-related clubs look on applications? Do they, too, strike admissions officers as a sign of a complacent student whose main goal is to look good? A famous idiom dates back to the first Democracy in ancient Greece: “Actions speak louder than words”. For U.S. presidential candidates, this idiom applies when candidates’ past actions are vetted against their campaign promises and positions. But unlike the other candidates -- and despite a 44 year career in politics! -- Bernie Sanders has received very little vetting of his actions against his campaign promises.
Are you really expressing yourself -- or are you just dressing a certain way? Are you really showing the world your true self -- or are you just putting on a performance for an audience?
When I saw #NationalSendANudeDay trending on Twitter last, I thought it was dumb and would obviously go away soon.
But it didn't, and then it trended on Facebook, too. I thought it would be a good time to remind everyone -- especially the young people: almost everyone you share a nude selfie with will show at least one (but usually multiple) other person.
Have you ever had an experience that was so wonderful that it was the last thing you thought about before you fell asleep every single night for five years?
I have. |
